Scuba Diving in Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte, Philippines - Diver Bliss
Limasawa Island is a small island near Leyte. It sits about 6 kilometers from the southern tip and just outside the mouth of Sogod Bay. Limasawa Island is historically significant to Filipinos and Catholicism. When Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines in 1521, Limasawa was among the first islands he visited. On March 31, 1521, Father Pedro de Valderrama officiated the first Easter Sunday Mass in the Philippines. This was also the first Mass in the Far East. It is said that the rajah of the island at that time was Rajah Kolambu who had five wives. Thus the name, Limasawa. Lima = five, and asawa = husband/wife. Something that the Catholic Spanish colonizers must have found shocking. Last October 2021, I got the chance to scuba dive in Limasawa island. A must if you are scuba diving in Southern Leyte! The diving was so fantastic that no doubt this place has been graced by God. The reef was thriving with color and life. It was an absolute paradise.
