Sustainable living is when an individual attempts to reduce his use of the earth’s natural resources. He can do this by altering his methods of transportation, energy consumption, and diet.
Basically, it is a lifestyle where you stop being shitty to our environment! It’s about making better choices when it comes to the things you consume. Your goal is to lessen the negative impact you have on our planet.
Having a sustainable lifestyle can’t just happen overnight. It is something that you do at your own pace. And it is a commitment you practice every day.
It can be as simple as bringing your own bag when you go shopping. Or take a reusable water bottle with you when you travel to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles. It does not have to be big because every little bit of action counts
Just start. And then, keep on doing.
The importance of sustainable lifestyle
We have been blessed with this beautiful earth. Unfortunately, because of human activity, we are facing a rapid loss of the different species that roam our planet.
Plant and wildlife populations have declined. Some have even become extinct because we have caused so much destruction to our environment. We must remember that all living things have a role to play in our ecosystem. We must do our share to protect all species in order for us to survive and thrive.
As a scuba diver, I feel more protective of our oceans. I have seen corals that have bleached and died. Plastic waste has polluted our beautiful reefs and deep seas. Marine animals getting trapped in discarded fishing nets. I can go on and on! We can be terrible human beings sometimes.
How to live sustainably
Although these experiences have left me feeling sad, it has also empowered me to make changes in my life. I do this by making better choices when it comes to the things I consume. I have done several easy zero waste swaps in the past and it has changed the way I live.
Before buying, it is helpful to ask yourself: “Do I really need to buy this? Do I already have something that I can use instead?” Which one will be less harmful to the environment?
Do your research and make an informed decision. Just because an eco-conscious store is selling all these eco-friendly alternatives, doesn’t mean you go buy everything they have. Remember that the most basic practice in a sustainable lifestyle is refusing.
